“When you find yourself in trouble, the first thing people try to provide you with is food and shelter. This year, I became a refugee. It’s awful to be in exile, especially when the only place you want to flee to is back home. Being a refugee is a life-altering experience that’s hard to grasp without living through it… People provided me with warm clothing, even though I wasn’t cold, and each donation became a memory of the journey traveled, of the warmth of human contact amidst great and terrible evil. Every possession became a treasure that I carry with me from country to country, from city to city. And a number of possessions grow as the war persists.”
