The Cage

“This was the beginning of the war and I was forced to flee. My hometown, Kharkiv, was constantly bombarded with rockets, and I had to save my own life and the lives of my children. After I reached safety, I somehow started to feel trapped. I was with people who were kind and friendly, I had help and yet I still felt as though I had fallen into a trap and was immobilized within it. When Sven suggested that I do something as part of the Tracks project (which involved conversations between Europeans and Ukrainians), I asked for a cage to be brought to me.

I spent 4 hours in this improvised jail, but I felt like my emotions were finally starting to come to life.
It was less painful for me to be locked in a cage than to be living in exile. Sven played Ukrainian songs for me while I was in the cage. Adults were hesitant, but children approached me and we talked about life.”
